Karima Baadilla is an artist of Indonesian heritage currently based in rural Victoria. Working across several mediums, Baadilla is best known for her vibrant paintings that explore parts of her everyday life and shifting migrant identity. Always energetically-charged, her paintings range in subject matter, from landscapes and still life scenes, to candid representations of people and animals.
In ‘Soft places, peonies’, Baadilla represents a still-life painting of a peony cutting, painted on aluminium. Built through loose, expressive brushstrokes, Baadilla accents the peonies against a turbulent steel blue background, creating a painting that is full of contrast and movement. Through thick layers of oil paint, Baadilla’s painting is rich with a palpable sense of texture and dimension.
Baadilla has been the finalist of numerous prestigious art prizes, including the Paddington Art Prize, the Bayside Acquisitive Prize and the Collie Art Prize. She has exhibited widely across Australia in solo and group exhibitions, and her works are held in private collections within Australia and internationally. For lovers of playful contemporary art, the works of Karima Baadilla are a wonderful addition to any collection.
