Susan Baird is a contemporary Australian artist, best known for her highly gestural representations of the Australian landscape. Living between Sydney and Hill End, a historic gold-mining town located in rural NSW, Baird often paints en plein air, drawing inspiration from her surrounding environment and its ever-changing light-filled landscapes.
In ‘Autumnal Shimmer’, Baird presents an abstracted landscape in transition, shaped by the shifting rhythms of the seasons. Soft, diffused forms and blurred contours evoke the sensation of a faded memory, an interpretation of the artist’s personal perspective. A luminous palette of greens, blues, yellows and pinks captures the quiet vibrancy of early autumn, imbuing the work with warmth and movement. Both evocative and reflective, the painting gently alludes to the passage of time and its quiet inevitability.
Baird has been the recipient of numerous residencies and been the finalist of many awards, including The Fishers Ghost, The Paddington Art Prize and The Calleen Art Award. Her works are part of several collections, including the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and Artbank in Melbourne. For lovers of contemporary abstract Australian landscapes, the works of Susan Baird are a wonderful addition to any collection.
