Susan Baird

B. 1964

Susan Baird is a contemporary Australian artist, best known for her highly gestural representations of the Australian landscape. Living between Sydney and Hill End, a historic gold-mining town located in rural NSW, Baird often paints en plein air, drawing inspiration from her surrounding environment and its ever-changing light-filled landscapes.

Baird was largely self-taught between 1984-92, holding her first exhibition in Australia in 1984. In 1992, Baird moved to New York City where she attended the New York Studio School to focus on her painting. Five years later, Baird moved back to Australia and studied at the National Art School in Sydney. In 2013, she furthered her formal training by completing a Master of Art from the University of New South Wales, College of Fine Art.

Baird has been the recipient of numerous residencies and been the finalist of many awards, including The Fishers Ghost, The Paddington Art Prize and The Calleen Art Award. Her works are part of several collections, including the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Cowra Regional Art Gallery and Artbank in Melbourne, as well as private and corporate collections across Australia, New Zealand and USA.
