Susan Baird is a contemporary Australian artist, best known for her highly gestural representations of the Australian landscape. Living between Sydney and Hill End, a historic gold-mining town located in rural NSW, Baird often paints en plein air, drawing inspiration from her surrounding environment and its ever-changing light-filled landscapes.
Baird’s painting ‘Back Fence Towards Bald Hill’ depicts a New South Wales landscape with a quiet, meditative sensibility, encouraging slow looking and reflection. Its softened forms and diffused edges evoke the quality of a fading memory, offering an intimate glimpse into Baird’s inner world. Rendered in a subdued palette of greens, blues, and greys, the work cultivates a gentle, atmospheric calm. Both reflective and deeply personal, the painting unfolds like a view through time, layered with recollection and emotion.
Baird has been the recipient of numerous residencies and been the finalist of many awards, including The Fishers Ghost, The Paddington Art Prize and The Calleen Art Award. Her works are part of several collections, including the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and Artbank in Melbourne. For lovers of contemporary abstract Australian landscapes, the works of Susan Baird are a wonderful addition to any collection.
