Susan Baird is a contemporary Australian artist, best known for her highly gestural representations of the Australian landscape. Living between Sydney and Hill End, a historic gold-mining town located in rural NSW, Baird often paints en plein air, drawing inspiration from her surrounding environment and its ever-changing light-filled landscapes.
In ‘Conversation,’ Baird paints an interior scene that offers slow, contemplative viewing and quiet introspection. In this painting, Baird’s use of soft forms and blurred edges suggest that the scene is a fading memory, offering an intimate look into the artist’s personal perspective. Using a soft colour palette of muted greens, blues and greys, Baird creates a calm atmosphere that invites the viewer in. ‘Conversation’ is a beautifully intimate piece that feels like you are looking through layers of time.
Baird has been the recipient of numerous residencies and been the finalist of many awards, including The Fishers Ghost, The Paddington Art Prize and The Calleen Art Award. Her works are part of several collections, including the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and Artbank in Melbourne. For lovers of contemporary abstract Australian landscapes, the works of Susan Baird are a wonderful addition to any collection.
