Dean Bowen is a contemporary Australian print-maker, painter, and sculptor based in Victoria. Across his various disciplines, Bowen’s ‘radical innocence’ artistic style has seen him create an aesthetic language which celebrates serendipitous simplicity in an increasingly urbanised world. Using this visual lexicon, Bowen’s works often feature Australian native wildlife and scenes of suburban domestic living, imbuing them with a distinct sense of youthful optimism and joy.
In the 2022 lithograph, ‘The Home of Love’ reflects on the home as a space that offers comfort, joy and sanctuary. Picturing a house with a red heart-shaped cloud billowing out from its chimney, this work flirts with Pop Art qualities through its vibrant colour palette and flattened surfaces. This work represents the domestic realm as a space that captures intimate moments, associated with a deep sense of affection, warmth and sanctuary. As characteristic of Bowen’s practice, he seamlessly blends personal experiences with collectively understood themes, able to resonate with one’s own memories of home.
With a practice spanning over 40 years, Bowen has regularly exhibited both nationally and internationally. Across his various disciplines, Bowen is represented within many major art institutions, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Australia and the Australian War Memorial. For collectors of contemporary Australian printmaking and lovers of the domestic realm, ‘The Home of Love’ is an endearing find.
