A Macedonian/Australian contemporary artist, Violeta Capovska works across mediums – printmaking, installation, performance, photography, video and textiles. In her elegant, often abstract configuration, she draws out her cross-cultural experiences of identity, as well as philosophies of nature and gender.

The 2012 linocut work ‘Ana Pavlova 8’ features a pink dahlia against a striped background. Evoking the style of embroidered flowers, this work nods to a distant past. Much like the precision involved in printmaking, these practices involved hours of labour, often understood as the type of work taken up by women. This work was inspired by the timeless beauty of the dahlia, a flower emblematic of elegance and inner strength. This flower prompted the work’s title, inspired by famous prima ballerina Ana Pavlova.

Capovska's work is represented across public collections including at the National Gallery of Australia, Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, National Gallery of Macedonia, Museum of Contemporary Art- Skopje and Museum of the City of Skopje. She was the recipient of the James Northfield Lithography scholarship in 2016. In 2021 she won a 2 month Artist Residency at the Cite International in Paris.

For lovers of contemporary printmaking, Capovska’s ‘Ana Pavlova 8’ is a compelling find.
