Hannah Caprice is a contemporary printmaker based in Melbourne, Victoria. Caprice’s work features eccentric creatures searching for solace and belonging. These themes reflect on her background being raised in a cross-cultural household, where Caprice sought comfort in being an “adaptable misfit.” Her fantastical creatures are an ode to self-acceptance.
Caprice’s 2021 etching “Out of gas” focuses on an animal-machine hybrid, with the body of a car and koala combined with the back legs of an insect. This creature finds itself slumped on the moon, with a backdrop of the starry cosmos and the earth on the horizon. The surprising comparison of creature and setting conjure a sense of whimsy, encouraging audiences to read into the story behind this unexpected pairing.
