A two-time winner of the Archibald Prize, Judy Cassab AO CBE (1920- 2015) was a portraitist of immense insight and imagination, seemingly able to capture not only a sitter’s likeness but the spirit of their times. As well as painting social luminaries, royals, fellow artists, family and friends, she was also a prolific draughtswoman, printmaker, and an acclaimed landscape artist. Today, Cassab’s portraits reside in the British Royal Collection, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, and many other prominent and prestigious public, corporate, and notable private collections.
The present etching reflects Judy Cassab’s prowess as a graphic artist. Created in collaboration with the Crown Street Press, it presents a more private side of Cassab’s artistic output with a focus on the intimate circle of family and friends. The etching captures the esteemed Sydney-based painter and one of Cassabs closest friends, Margaret Woodward, and Marina Finlay, professional model and artist, who had also appeared in a number of works by Charles Blackman, another of Judy Cassab’s close friends.
This work is a wonderful find for budding art buyers, seasoned connoisseurs of graphic arts, and dedicated collectors of works by women artists.
