Judy Cassab was a formidable Australian portraitist, renowned for her ability to capture the likeness of her subjects. As the first woman to win the Archibald Prize twice, Cassab was widely celebrated for her artistic ability. After surviving the Holocaust, Cassab worked tirelessly to establish her artistic career in Australia. Arriving in the country in 1951, she held her first solo exhibition in 1953, and won her first Archibald Prize in 1960.
This etching reflects Cassab’s multidisciplinary talent and prowess as a graphic artist. Soft, delicate figures embrace in a moment of tender solitude. Devoid of colour, Cassab creates a lifelike, emotional scene with a minimalistic black line. Created in collaboration with the Crown Street Press, it presents a more private side of Cassab’s life – an intimate window into her circle of family and friends.
Today, Cassab’s portraits reside in the British Royal Collection, National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, and many other public, corporate, and private collections. This work is a wonderful find for budding art buyers, seasoned connoisseurs of graphic arts, and dedicated collectors of works by women artists.
