Isabelle Chouinard is a contemporary Melbourne-based artist and musician born in Montreal, Canada. With a painting practice spanning twenty years, Chouinard is best known for her still life oil paintings, often involving arrangements of everyday objects, placed together to create visually harmonious compositions. Through her art, Chouinard strives for what she describes as “visual poetry”.

In ‘Pears in a red bowl’, Chouinard creates a layered composition that is instantly visually intriguing. The foreground is dominated by a classic still life arrangement of fruit in a bowl, while a postcard pinned to the wall behind acts as a “painting within the painting.” Through this interplay, Chouinard constructs a scene rich with visual symmetry. As in many of her works, the elements, the sheets of paper, the pears, the red bowl, are carefully arranged to echo and mirror the composition of the postcard image.

Chouinard has held exhibitions of her works across Australia. She has been a finalist in several art awards and prizes throughout her career, including the Portia Geach Memorial Prize in Sydney and the Bayside Painting Prize in Melbourne in 2025. For lovers of evocative still life paintings, or those fascinated by contemporary Australian artists, Chouinard’s works are a joy to discover.
