Warren Cooke is a contemporary printmaking artist based on the Mornington Peninsula. His vibrant prints reflect on the flora and fauna he encounters seafaring along the Mornington coastline. In recent years, his printmaking practice has incorporated the reduction woodcut technique. This technique is visible across the surfaces of his prints, in some cases revealing the texture of the wood in the final print.

Cooke’s 2019 reduction woodcut “Land and sea #59,” pictures the glittering surface of the ocean under the hot Australian sun. This scene places the viewer in the position of a sailor, with the closest landmass far in the distance. This work was created with a combination of hand and press printing, making the final work appear almost painterly through its intricate layers of colour. This print speaks to the wanderlust conjured by the ocean. Looking at this print, you can almost feel the ocean air on your face, liberated and at one with the roll of the tides.

Cooke is an acclaimed printmaker, featuring in several Australian and international collections. Some notable career highlights include a solo exhibition at Benalla Regional Art Gallery and being recognised as a finalist in the Fremantle Print Prize, Burnie Print Prize and Silk Cut Awards.

For any collector of Australian landscapes, Cooke’s “Land and sea #59” is a breathtaking find.
