Dale Cox’s ‘Untitled (Landscape)’ is meticulous. From his first exhibited series, this formative painting pictures the Australian bush – cerulean sky, spindly eucalyptus trees and orange earth – interrupted by three zooming motorcyclists.

In the decades since this work was produced, Cox has developed a thought-provoking and revered practice, exploring how human activity can threaten and conflict with nature. ‘Untitled (Landscape)’ is an early expression of this idea, evoking nature, the history of landscape painting and the roar of petrol-fuelled technology. Cox is represented across public collections including at Deakin University, Artbank, the Art Gallery of Ballarat and Parliament House. In 2013 he was awarded First Prize in the Melbourne Savage Club Art Prize and in 2019 won a People’s Choice Award at the R&M McGivern Prize.

For collectors of contemporary landscapes, ‘Untitled (Landscape)’ is a luminous yet prescient find.
