John Cullinane’s work is drawn from media, books, stories and observed moments. He conjures an atmosphere, mise en scenes that are rich in feeling and narrative. Before his work viewers are compelled to ponder, allowing their mind to wind up, as the artist describes, “in a place that they would have never considered”, “Hey, how did I get here?”.

In the atmospheric ‘Beacon’, a woman sits on a park bench. Beside her, a child gazes out at the teal ocean and distant gaze of a lighthouse. A metaphor for contemplation or the seeking of a sign, Cullinane’s lighthouse appears divine – a North Star that the woman will either notice or not. ‘Beacon’ is a feat of narrative and tone, drawing the viewer to continue the story it starts.

Represented at the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House as well as numerous tertiary and council galleries, Cullinane is a collectable and distinct artist. Poetic yet understated, ‘Beacon’ is for collectors of contemporary and figurative art, as well as an inspired homecoming gift.
