John Cullinane’s work is drawn from media, books, stories and observed moments. He conjures an atmosphere, mise en scenes that are rich in feeling and narrative. Before his work viewers are compelled to ponder, allowing their mind to wind up, as the artist describes, “in a place that they would have never considered… “Hey, how did I get here?””.

In this work, Cullinane paints the myth of Icarus – the son of a craftsman who, with waxen wings, flew too close to the sun to fatal ends. Here he falls, a mortal asteroid in a vividly coloured landscape. The myth of Icarus holds resonance to this day, a warning to heed risk and know your limits.

Represented at the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Parliament House as well as numerous tertiary and council galleries, Cullinane is a collectable artist. Inventive yet timeless, ‘Icarus’ is for collectors of contemporary figurative art and classical imagery.
