Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
An evocative scene and a nod to Australia’s deeply entrenched beach culture, this work features a distinctly Roar-styled figure glancing back toward an empty shoreline. It invites the question: are they a local savouring a rare moment of quiet before the crowds arrive—or reflecting on a recently vacated beach, imbued with the stillness of a summer just passed? Or perhaps it’s a memory, the artist reminiscing on a fleeting moment of solitude by the sea.
For collectors drawn to Australian landscapes, beach culture, and paintings that evoke both serenity and an essence of the Australian sensibility, 'Beach Body + Towel' is a captivating work that embodies both in equal measure.
