Ann Howie
B. 1958 –
Ann Howie was part of the group of artists who founded Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist run initiatives. Between 1982 and 2000, she and artists like David Larwill, Mark Schaller and Pasquale Giardino produced work that acted as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, imagining a new model for exhibiting and sharing art.
Since the days of Roar Studios, Howie has continued producing art. Her work explores the possibilities of composition, producing landscapes and still lives that follow the logic of patchwork quilts – fields of texture building into cohesion.
As well as numerous community art projects, Howie is represented in public collections around Victoria including Art Bank, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Shepparton Art Gallery, Richmond City Council and Footscray City Council.
