Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
An avid love of nature is intrinsic to the practice of Melbourne-based artist Ann Howie. Howie has built a practice that explores the possibilities of composition. Stretching between the sheltered bay beaches and the crashing waves of Flinders Ocean Beach, 'Cape Schanck' offers a dynamic and immersive experience. A boardwalk anchors the composition which leads down and out to the beach and rock platforms, extending toward the horizon. Off to the side, dramatic cliffs and volcanic formations add a sense of mystery, while scenic walking tracks reveal unspoiled beaches and breath-taking ocean views.
For collectors drawn to Australian landscapes, nature, and paintings that evoke both serenity and the essence of the Australian coastal landscape, 'Cape Schanck' is a captivating work that embodies both in equal measure.
