Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
An avid love of nature is intrinsic to the practice of Melbourne-based artist Ann Howie, whose work thoughtfully explores the possibilities of composition. Nature and environmental awareness permeate the predominantly coastal landscapes in Ann Howie’s work, and Erosion is no exception. Portraying a windswept beachscape, the painting’s serenity quietly contrasts with the underlying reality of natural erosion slowly reshaping the land. Influenced by forces such as waves, storms, and rising sea levels, Anglesea’s coastline is in constant flux. Painted in 2010, the work poses an intriguing question: what might this snapshot of the landscape look like today?
For collectors drawn to Australian landscapes, nature, and paintings that evoke both serenity and an essence of the Australian coastal landscape, 'Erosion' is a captivating work that embodies both in equal measure.
