Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
An avid love of nature is intrinsic to the practice of Melbourne-based artist Ann Howie, whose work thoughtfully explores the possibilities of composition. In her depiction of the Bluff in Anglesea—a striking coastal landmark known for its weathered cliffs and sweeping ridgeline views—a vivid surge of ochre immediately captures the viewer’s attention. Dense with coastal foliage such as teatree and mountain ash, the scene guides the eye upward toward the bluff, then beyond, to a storm-laden sky brooding on the horizon.
For collectors drawn to Australian landscapes, nature, and paintings that evoke both serenity and an essence of the Australian coastal landscape, 'Near the Bluff' is a captivating work that embodies both in equal measure.
