Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.

An avid love of nature is intrinsic to the practice of Melbourne-based artist Ann Howie. Howie has built a practice that explores the possibilities of composition. She constructs a landscape like a patchwork quilt, drawing the eye up and through each shrub, path and rock is treated as a beat, uniting in visual harmony. As the title implies, in this composition natural landscape patterns emerge across the canvas in a gridded matrix—each section appearing as a close-up study of the natural world, yet when viewed from a distance, they converge to form a unified, reimagined whole. A truly intriguing and inspiring impression.

For collectors drawn to Australian landscapes, nature, and paintings that evoke both serenity and a spirit of adventure, 'Pattern' is a captivating work that embodies both in equal measure.
