Jennifer Huang is a Melbourne-based contemporary painter, whose practice is heavily inspired by Chinese visual culture and the European Old Masters. Predominantly an oil painter, Huang’s works possess a palpable tenderness, often created through a muted colour palette and soft ambient light.

In ‘Still Life with Azaleas, Cake and Kangaroo Vertebra,’ Huang depicts a soft still life scene of cake and azaleas juxtaposed alongside a piece of kangaroo vertebra sitting on the edge of the table. There is something playful about Huang’s composition in this painting; where the inclusion of the kangaroo vertebra has classical connotations of mortality, the uneaten slice of cake and petite bouquet of azaleas appear unexpectedly, straight from a childhood birthday party. This painting is an intimate piece, representative of Huang’s strong command of composition and ability to create atmosphere.

Huang is both an artist and educator, having studied at the Rob Gutteridge School of Classical Realism and Studio Escalier in France, as well as teaching painting and drawing classes at Victorian Artists Society in Melbourne. She has been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the Naked & Nude Art Prize, the A.M.E Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize and the Acland St Traders People Award Winner for the annual Linden Postcard Show at Linden New Art.
