Jennifer Huang is a Melbourne-based contemporary painter, whose practice is heavily inspired by Chinese visual culture and the European Old Masters. Predominantly an oil painter, Huang’s works possess a palpable tenderness, often created through a muted colour palette and soft ambient light.
‘Studio Self Portrait’ is an intimate self portrait, as she stands proudly in front of a wall of paintings with her palette. Drawn to the works of the European Old Masters, Huang pictures herself standing in front of the iconic ‘Las Meninas’ or ‘The Ladies in Waiting’ - a renowned 17th century painting from Spanish artist Diego Velazquez. Through this, the viewer is witness to Huang’s biggest artistic inspirations in a tangible, contemporary way. ‘Studio Self Portrait’ is highly representative of Huang’s strong command of composition and her unique ability to create atmosphere.
Huang is both an artist and educator, having studied at the Rob Gutteridge School of Classical Realism and Studio Escalier in France, as well as teaching painting and drawing classes at Victorian Artists Society in Melbourne. She has been a finalist in numerous art prizes, including the Naked & Nude Art Prize, the A.M.E Bale Travelling Scholarship and Art Prize and the Acland St Traders People Award Winner for the annual Linden Postcard Show at Linden New Art.
