Sue Jarvis is a Victoria-based artist who is best known for her evocative and atmospheric oil paintings. With a full-time artistic practice beginning in 1981, Jarvis has forged a career through observing and interpreting the world through her own personal lens. With an emphasis on shape, colour, and simplicity, Jarvis creates scenes that are intimate and resonant.
In ‘Still Life in Shadow and Light’, Jarvis creates a richly layered still life scene, arranged in an interior setting. Departing from traditionally composed scenes, Jarvis’ painting is deeply reflective of her own perspective - the flowers are partially obscured from view, the bench is decorated with miscellaneous objects. Through a vivid colour palette and expressionist brushstrokes, Jarvis’ domestic scene feels animated - abundant with life, atmosphere, and movement.
Jarvis has exhibited widely across Australia, and she has been a finalist and recipient of several art prizes, including the Gallipoli art prize in 2024. She is a founding member of the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network and a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Her paintings are held in significant public collections, including the State Library of Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.
For collectors of oil paintings, or those fascinated by atmospheric tonal studies, Jarvis’ paintings are a quietly luminous discovery.
