Sue Jarvis
Sue Jarvis is an Australian painter who is best known for her works inspired by contemporary life and events. She was born in Greater Dandenong, where her passion for creativity and love of gardening began. Working with predominately oils, watercolours and acrylics, Jarvis has been a full-time artist since 1981. Her work engages with many aspects of contemporary life and culture, drawing on current social issues and changing political, social and cultural landscapes. Working with a limited colour palette, Jarvis’ work focuses on creative ways to use light, layout, shape and pattern.
Jarvis has exhibited across Australia, and she has been successful in several national competitions, winning the major Annie Davidson Oliver Award at the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors in 2019 and being a finalist in the 2024 Gallipoli Prize. Jarvis’ works are held in collections across Australia, including two works in the State Library of Victoria and one at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Jarvis has a gallery of her works in Gembrook, on a large botanical property that she purchased in 1971.
