Sue Jarvis is a Victoria-based artist who is best known for her evocative and atmospheric oil paintings. With a full-time artistic practice beginning in 1981, Jarvis has forged a career through observing and interpreting the world through her own personal lens. With an emphasis on shape, colour, and simplicity, Jarvis creates scenes that are intimate and resonant - paintings abundant with life.
In ‘The Striped Chair’, Jarvis uses a subtle and neutrally-toned colour palette to render a contemplative study of her female subject. Through Jarvis’ eyes, the female body is not isolated, but is instead embedded within her surroundings. In softly-rendered angles, the body and blanket appear in visual harmony, with the striped couch quietly punctuation the sense of visual cohesion. Jarvis’s painting is tender and assured, a tonal study that connects the human body with its environment.
Jarvis has exhibited widely across Australia, and she has been a finalist and recipient of several art prizes, including the Gallipoli art prize in 2024. She is a founding member of the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network and a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. Her paintings are held in significant public collections, including the State Library of Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne.
For collectors of oil paintings, or those fascinated by atmospheric tonal studies, Jarvis’ paintings are a quietly luminous discovery.
