Working primarily in etching and drawing, Melbourne-based artist Hyunju Kim is best known for her magical realism style, merging different worlds and realities together. Her works are often vivdly-coloured and highly imaginative - inspired by her own experiences living overseas and informed by her unique perspective on life. Through Kim’s eyes, worlds unfold vibrantly.
Through her work, Kim often draws influence from nature, culture, mythology and spiritualism. In her work ‘Queen of Wands’, this inspired sense of imagination is profoundly present. This particular etching belongs to her ‘tarot cards’ series - in the realm of tarot, the ‘Queen of Wands’ is a strong female protagonist, symbolic of charisma and authentic self-expression. In bright orange hues the imagined Queen is powerfully charged, radiating optimism and confidence.
Kim has exhibited her works both nationally and internationally, and she has lived, exhibited and undertaken residencies in over sixteen countries. In 2022, her artwork was chosen for the Beijing Winter Olympics Print Portfolio, and she was a finalist in the International Print Biennial at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. For lovers of contemporary printmaking, Kim’s ‘Queen of Wands’ is an energetic and inspired addition to any collection.
