Jasper Knight takes after pop masters of the past. Rather than starlets however, he pictures icons of industry – beams, machinery, buildings and lighthouses. Found on the city’s outskirts, these images trade in an unexpected dichotomy: urban detritus rendered in oozing, technicolour excess.
In ‘A is for Adventure’, Knight turns to one of his favourite subjects: cars, or more specifically a Jeep. The creature shines in brilliant yellow, a symbol of adventure that despite its machinery, oozes paint. Juxtaposing industrialisation with sumptuousness, Knight presents the Jeep as tactical, bold and visceral.
With a subject and life that speaks to adventure, this work was born as a crown jewel for a Jeep dealership and persists as a prize piece for collectors of contemporary and pop art. Knight has been a finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes. Using bright, flat blocks of colour dripping in paint to depict his subjects, Knights style is distinctive and bold. Take your collection off the beaten track.
