Jasper Knight takes after pop masters of the past. Rather than starlets however, he pictures icons of industry – beams, machinery, buildings and lighthouses found on the city’s outskirts. He trades in an unexpected harmony: urban detritus rendered in oozing technicolour excess.

‘Palm Beach Wharf’ is an original screenprint on paper, recognisably by Knight. In it a wharf protrudes from the Palm Beach docks, a shipping container stamped with the logo for ‘Goodyear Autocare’ in the background. The artist constructs a collage of vivid colours and texture, treating a worksite as an aesthetic puzzle worthy of our eye, calling to mind Jeffrey Smart’s sublime highways.

Knight is a multi-time finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes, represented in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia. Using bright, flat blocks of oozing colour to depict his subjects, Knights style is cool, bold and tactile. Beautifully presented with a black frame, this daring dock will add an edge to your space, enriching collections of contemporary and pop art.
