Jasper Knight takes after pop masters of the past. Rather than starlets however, he pictures icons of industry - beams, machinery, buildings and lighthouses. Found on the city’s outskirts, these images trade in a strange dichotomy: urban detritus rendered in oozing, technicolour excess.

Yellow and Grey Suspension Bridge’ is recognisably Knight. In it, he pictures a suspension bridge up close, oozing paint. It echoes Grace Cossington Smith’s ‘The Bridge in-curve’, the great 1930 portrait of a city coming into modernity. In Knight’s version, the energy to animate modernity has subsided. Our bridges are no longer new, their magnificence familiar.

Knight has been a finalist in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes. Using bright, flat colour-blocking with characteristic paint-drips to depict his subjects, Knights style is cool and bold. This statuesque painting will add an edge to your space, enriching collections of contemporary art and Knight.
