Philippe Le Miere is a Melbourne-based contemporary multidisciplinary artist, known best for his informed artistic references to popular culture, contemporary myths, and art historical subjects. Dynamic and richly layered, Le Miere's 'Study for Banquet' is a re-imagining of one of the National Gallery of Victoria's oldest and most well-regarded paintings.
In his classic style, Le Miere creates a modern interpretation of Giambattista Tiepolo's 'The Banquet of Cleopatra', a 1743-44 painting that tells the tragically-fated story of Anthony and Cleopatra, a favourite subject of the Rococo era. This scene is one of opulence and exquisite wealth - at the end of her feast, the Egyptian queen dissolves her priceless pearl earring in vinegar to prove that she is the more lavish host. This sense of wealth is masterfully captured in Le Miere's work, with its richly textured surface and broadly layered brushstrokes creating an atmospheric sense of narrative.
For collectors of contemporary art, or those enamoured by modern retellings of classic works, 'Study for Banquet' is an intriguing find.
