In “Small Reflection One”, John Neeson presents a monotone still life composition that transforms ordinary objects into meticulous meditations on form, light, and perception. There is something distinctly surreal in this work - two objects sitting together in an ambiguous landscape, as if emerged from a dream. The objects, suggestive of childhood and play, could also be visual motifs of larger proportions, yet when stripped of colour and anecdotal detail, these objects become studies in volume, balance, and proportion.

As with much of Neeson’s practice, the work exists between reality and idealisation. The carefully orchestrated composition recalls the traditions of Giorgio Morandi and the metaphysical painters, while remaining distinctly contemporary in its clarity and restraint. By isolating these humble forms and elevating them through his artistic vision, Neeson creates a work that is both intellectually rigorous and quietly poetic, revealing the extraordinary within the seemingly ordinary. Represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia, Neeson has established himself as one of Australia's most exciting contemporary artists.
