Birds nest throughout Sidney Nolan’s work, some soar, some are flightless, some whimsical and some brooding. In the shades of their existence the artist saw himself, how the oscillate between being ungainly and in command of the skies.
In this original mixed media on paper, Nolan’s birds dart across the sky. They are flashes of pastel against a glowering sky, perhaps flying to evade an encroaching storm. Interested in cave paintings, Nolan’s experimental use of crayon rubbing evokes drawing on rock, giving this work a sense of ancientness.
Dated circa 1958, ‘Birds and Landscape’ is an accessible entry into Nolan’s iconic and career-long consideration of the Australian landscape. For collectors of important works on paper and landscape, fly free with ‘Birds and Landscape.’
