Sidney Nolan
B. 1917 – 1992
Born in Melbourne in 1917, Sidney Nolan is one of Australia's most renowned artists. He was a member of the Heide Circle – a group of artists known for championing figurative Modernism.
Nolan's work is characterised by his personal interpretations of Australian historical and legendary figures including the explorers Burke and Wills, Eliza Fraser and Ned Kelly for which he is most renown. His Ned Kelly saga feature highly stylised depictions of the bushranger and the Australian landscape and serve not as a historical account, but also a vessel to explore themes of love, betrayal and injustice.
Nolan's work is represented both nationally and internationally at galleries including the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Tate Gallery in London.
