In Kathryn Ryan's work, landscapes take on a sensuous resonance. Set in the space between night and day, her scenes are at once bold and subtle - evoking the suggestive poetry of the land.
In her striking, large-scale oil painting 'Approaching Nightfall', Ryan renders the natural landscape as both familiar and dreamlike. A vibrant palette of greens draws us into an immersive scene, where recognisable forms seem to dissolve into something more elusive. The result is a landscape that feels half-remembered, hovering between lived experience and imagination.
An esteemed contemporary artist, Ryan is the subject of a monograph and was celebrated in 2015 with a major retrospective at The Warrnambool Art Gallery. Dividing her time between the United Arab Emirates and Australia, her bold yet subtle imagery is avidly collected and she is multi-time Wynne Prize finalist.
