Jim Thalassoudis's recent body of work focuses on neon signs, formerly much-maligned as visual pollution but currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity as heritage-listed vintage artefacts. The richness of saturated colours is contrasted by the artist effectively against the night-time skyline resulting in a composition that is at once memorable and iconic.

The work was inspired by the crown which adorns the Regal Theatre in Subiaco, Perth. Opened in 1938 as a cinema and named in honour of King George VI,  it was converted into a theatre in 1977. Considered as one of the most important examples of Art Deco architecture in Western Australia, the Regal Theatre was placed on the heritage register in 1994.

Described as one of the most outstanding colourists of his generation, the Adelaide-based Thalassoudis has been exhibiting regularly since the mid-1980s. Finalist in the 2015 edition of the Wynne Prize, the artist has attained curatorial and collectors’ following. His works have been acquired by notable public, corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.
