This digitally rendered work was conceived during the pandemic. It is an iteration of Jim Thalassoudis’s mother image – an large neon heart that lived in Adelaide and now the artist’s studio. Thalassoudis’s first portrait of the sign, ‘Love Art’, was collected by the Art Gallery of South Australia.

In this glitch, Thalassoudis hangs his heart in an earthly dreamscape. It is an Augmented Reality work, meaning that when seen through your smartphone, the heart moves. Spinning, sparkling and shimmering like a mirage, this series was an aesthetic adventure when leaving your home was inadvisable. It is a beacon of beauty and possibility from the digital realm.

Described as one of the most outstanding colourists of his generation, the Adelaide-based Thalassoudis has been exhibiting regularly since the mid-1980s. A finalist in the 2015 edition of the Wynne Prize, he has attained curatorial and collectors’ following. His works have been acquired by notable public, corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.

For collectors of contemporary prints and pop art, this work is a beguiling and fresh find, and is accompanied by an NFT. What do you see in this beating heart?
