Amanda Upton’s visual world is equal parts whimsical and mysterious. Her characters occupy richly detailed scenes, sometimes fantastical, sometimes familiar. ‘The Muse’ decidedly falls into the former camp. It is a wonderfully strange work, featuring an insectile violinist performing from within a snail shell. Surreal and unexpectedly moving, ‘The Muse’ is Botticeli for the bottom of the garden.
Upton is an acclaimed artist and illustrator. Her work was included in Luerzers Archive Magazine collection of the world’s best illustrators and she was a Walkley Award finalist in 2000. She began her career as a cadet illustrator for the Courier Mail, then Sydney Morning Herald.
Reminiscent of magic realism, Upton finds the magic in everyday life. ‘The Muse’ is a dream come true for collectors of fantastical art and contemporary works on paper.
